Cervical mucus changes are one of the earliest and most reliable signs of pregnancy. Understanding what is normal and what is not can give you peace of mind throughout the nine months.
What is cervical mucus?
Cervical mucus is a fluid produced by the glands of the cervix. Its texture, color and quantity change with hormonal levels and play a key role in fertility, conception and pregnancy.
Cervical mucus by trimester
First trimester: increased white or milky discharge (leukorrhea) is normal due to rising estrogen. Second trimester: discharge remains thick, white and odorless. Third trimester: closer to labor, you may notice the mucus plug — a thick, jelly-like discharge sometimes tinged with pink or brown.
Colors and what they mean
White or clear: normal. Yellow or green: possible infection — see your doctor. Pink or brown: can be normal in early pregnancy or near labor, but report it. Bright red: bleeding — contact your specialist immediately.
